British Sign Language - Introduction

On this introductory course, you will learn some basic skills in fingerspelling and British Sign Language. An ideal course for anyone thinking of doing the Level 1 course.
Course Content
Teaching and learning activities include tutor demonstration, role-plays, video, pair and group work. Communication throughout the course is without voice.
Topics covered on this course include introductions, occupations, numbers, time, people, family and directions.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Understand and produce fingerspelling in a basic conversation when meeting people, using Deaf etiquette
- Know basic food, snacks and drinks in BSL
- Know basic numbers and calendar
- Understand signed communication and ask and answer simple questions about personal information
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
You will need to be able to spell accurately a broad range of everyday vocabulary.
No prior experience of signing is required but an interest in the Deaf community and culture is important.
First Class Requirements
Please bring a pen and paper or your electronic device if preferred.
Attendance Requirements
Regular attendance is advisable as if you miss a class, you may miss important new signs.
Assessment Methods
Learners will discuss their goals with the tutor who will assess their progress during the course through in-class observation and a range of activities. You will record and reflect on your progress in your Personal Learning Plan (PLP).
Further Study Options
Further to completing this course, you can enrol on the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.
