A booster to further develop your writing skills.

- The course is to help you practise writing skills in order to pass an exam or just to improve your writing skills overall.

- You will be taught the difference between formal and informal written English; how to use it and in the appropriate way/context.

- You will be taught how to use punctuation properly and the different spelling rules in English.

- We will study the difference between formal and informal text, notice their different features and practise writing them too.

- You will be taught to edit your writing in terms of grammar and spelling mistakes, tone, register, style, expression, purpose and audience.

- You will be taught specific exam techniques and tips to assist you in your writing

You need to already be able to write to express yourself in English, for example, in emails or informal letters to friends. You need to have a good level of English Speaking & Listening skills.

Course Content

This course will help you to improve your English writing skills:

You will practise planning, drafting and writing different types of formal and informal texts such as letters, emails and short reports.
You will know how to organise your information and ideas logically, using paragraphs, with an appropriate level of detail to get your points across
You will practise writing using correct grammar, a range of punctuation and suitable language and vocabulary for different purposes

You will be given the opportunity to use websites to help with your English and to use the college intranet system, Moodle.

Entry Requirements

You are an intermediate user of English (ESOL Level E3 or above) or EFL - Cambridge English PET, FCE or IELTS band grade 4.5 +, or CEFR B1 or above.

You are confident in speaking, listening, reading but want to improve your writing in English.

You are can cope with overall meaning in most situations although you are likely to make grammatical and spelling mistakes.

You can use some complex English written structures but need to be more accurate.

Maths and English Assessments
Before your tutor interview you are also requested to take an online assessment in maths and English at the college. This will help us ensure that the course is suitable for you and that you have the right English and maths skills to enjoy the course and succeed.

First Class Requirements

Pen and an A4 notepad of lined paper. Dictionary or Smartphone optional.

Attendance Requirements

You are expected to attend every class and complete the course.

Assessment Methods

There is no exam on this course. Your teacher will check your progress in writing on the course and give you advice on how to improve.

Further Study Options

At the end of the course you can:
- Attend another EFL short course e.g. Writing, Conversation and Pronunciation or Grammar
- Attend an EFL Cambridge exam course (e.g. PET, FCE, CAE)
- Attend an ESOL English language course (E3, L1 or L2)
- Attend an ESOL for Work or EFL English for Business (LCCI) course

Additional Information

There is no coursebook. The tutor will provide photocopies and activities.
