Some people think that Wagner was the greatest opera composer of the 19th century. Starting with ‘The flying Dutchman’, we will study his operas in detail.

Course Content

We will study all of Wagner’s mature music dramas, including the four-opera ‘Ring’ cycle. Introductions by the tutor will be complemented by extensive illustrations on DVD, CD and the piano. The operas will be examined in the context of the composer’s life and times.

The course is suitable for anyone who enjoys music and drama. No qualifications are needed.

It is very important to attend all classes, if possible. However, if you are unable to attend for any reason, please notify the tutor in advance.

Assessment Methods

There will be opportunities for discussion and questions. Learners will be invited to make short (five-minute) presentations from time to time. There is no written work.

Further Study Options

Learners are encouraged to attend performances of opera in the theatre or the cinema.
