Course Overview:

This course is specially designed for learners with Learning Difficulties and/ or Disabilities. The course aims to improve maths skills. This is a practical numeracy course based on core skills including using number, measuring, working with shapes, space and numerical data.

Each learner will have an individual assessment, and then an individual learning plan will be agreed.
This plan will have some specific targets which you will work on in all your lessons, and you will discuss the plan regularly with your teachers and support workers so that you can check if you are making progress.

Entry Requirements:

You will have a personal meeting with a teacher, where you can discuss what skills you already have, what you would like to work on, and what you would like to do in the future. If you have already done any courses, please bring details to the meeting. Please also bring any information about medical issues that we should know about.

Course Content:

The course will follow the Adult Pre Entry Level Numeracy course and the following are examples of the work you will be doing
• Number
o Counting to at least 10
o Choosing numbered objects up to 10
o Adding and subtracting numbers up to 10
• Measure, Shape and Space
o Learning the days of the week, and significant times of the day
o Choosing coins up to £2.00 and notes up to £10.00
o Working with 2D and 3D shapes
• Data
o Create a list of 5 items then put them in order by number, alphabetically and by pattern or sequence

Assessment Methods:

You will complete a diagnostic assessment during the first six weeks of term. Your teacher will then discuss your individual learning plan with you. You will also produce some work to show that you have improved your communication, and you will keep this in your own work folder.

Recognising Achievement
At the end of your course you will receive a certificate to show what you have learnt. The college has a celebration of Achievement in July where certificates are awarded.

Personalised Learning

At RACC we understand that everyone is different, has different goals and needs different support to achieve them. We meet with everyone individually to ask them about what they can do and what they need extra help with. For our Preparation for Work and Skills for Life (communication and number) course we can provide:

• 1:1 learning assistant to support you in class and in enjoying college life.
• 1:1 teaching for communication and numeracy skills
• Special equipment to help learners join in e.g. video magnifier, seating
• Braille or symbols information
• A signer

For leisure/ fun courses, you will need to be an independent traveller and learner, or bring your own helper with you.
At interview a learning plan will be put together with learner needs and interest in mind. We have a range of full-time courses to help learners prepare for work. Learners may also take the opportunity to mix and match learning and leisure courses. For example, additional leisure programmes can be taken alongside full-time (2 or 3 day programmes), or a selection of part-time courses can be chosen such as a literacy class to gain skills for life or work, alongside a fun, leisure ‘art’ class plus a sports course to help learners improve their own fitness. Our leisure courses help learners to meet other people and have fun while learning a new hobby.

How You Learn

Activities for people who have a learning difficulty take place in small groups of about six to nine people. We keep groups small so that everyone has a chance to take part, speak out and achieve. All groups are led by a tutor who is a specialist in their area. There is also a support worker who meets everyone when they arrive, stays with them at breaks and makes sure that they leave safely.

We have ‘The Shop’ at our Clifden site which is a fantastic resource linked to our Preparation for Work programmes. Learners get the opportunity to design and make products that they then package and sell in The Shop. We also have a fully equipped kitchen for our Catering programmes. Our ‘Working in Theatre’ programme gives learners the opportunity to rehearse and perform on stage in our Queen Charlotte Hall and in the Studio Theatre in Richmond. Our ‘Working in Sport & Leisure’ programme will take place in our newly refurbished Sports Hall & Health Gym.

The majority of our courses take place Monday to Saturday at the Clifden site in Twickenham. Working in Theatre runs at our Parkshot site in Richmond on Mondays and at CL on Tue & Thursdays.
