Do you buy art and never get it framed? Are you an artist or photographer with collection of unframed pieces? Have you considered a picture framing workshop?
In this workshop, you learn about the components of a well framed piece of art and learn the steps to producing the same results.
Using the Fine Art Trade Guild standards for framing art, you learn to:
Plan, design and measure a piece of art.
Cut the components for that art, including the mounts, frame, and glass.
Assemble the pieces to complete the framed piece to a professional standard.

Course Content

Each student will learn to
Measure, plan and cut a single mount, using a mount cutter.
Measure, cut and assemble the frames using a mitre saw.
Cut glass with a hand-held glass cutter.
Cut backing board with a Stanley knife or equivalent.
Join the frame with a pinner.
Assemble all the pieces to complete the framed piece to a professional standard.

Each student will learn to

Advanced achievement:
For those wanting additional challenges, students can:
Reuse an existing frame and reverse engineer the measurements to cut the mount for an image and reassemble the work ready to hang.
Work with deep box frames

Course Outcomes
By the end of the course, you will be able to
Identify the components of a picture frame.
Plan and measure all the components parts that make up a picture frame.
Cut, join, and assemble all parts to complete a framed piece.
Define the techniques for framing 2-dimensional art.
Take home a selection of complete framed pieces.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on the start date of the course. You should have good numerical skills as measurements and calculations are used throughout the sessions.

First Class Requirements

Please bring a :
notebook
pencil
eraser
ruler
selection of pictures.

NOTE: The dimensions of the pictures should be A4 (300mm x 210mm) or smaller and can be drawings, prints, photographs or paintings on paper. They should not be on board, canvas or fabric. For the initial piece you should stick to the recommended size. For the subsequent pieces, size will be dictated by space in the workshop, your intentions and what you can afford.

General advice is that if you work with smaller pieces, mistakes are less costly. It?s also easier to manage a smaller piece in the workshop.

The college provides a limited set of tools for the course and students have the option of purchasing a small selection of equipment. You will need to buy your own mount board and other materials. You can purchase these from college or bring your own.

Assessment Methods

There is no formal assessment for this course. The tutor is a professional picture framer and will provide guidance and feedback on your progress. Using Q&A, observations, PLPs, practical sessions using specialist classroom facilities to build a body of coursework and different outcomes that incorporate new techniques and processes.

Additional Information

The college provides a limited set of tools for the course. Students are encouraged to work together and share equipment. You will also be required to buy materials, including mount board, glass, backing and wood. You can purchase these from the tutor in the first session. In subsequent sessions, you can either buy from the tutor or purchase your own. Materials and equipment required will be discussed on the first day of term. This specialist course has been identified to run with fewer numbers and will have a maximum of 8 in the class.
