Ceramics Handbuilding and Throwing - All Levels (Eve)

This course is designed to let you follow your preferred style of making. You will be shown a range of techniques, and once you have mastered each technique you can choose how you would like to form with clay. Pinching, building with soft slabs and throwing will be covered for the beginners.

Course Content

Course aims:

You will learn how to reclaim clay
You will create small pinch pots without tools and decorate them with coloured slips
You will design a soft slab form using textures and templates
You can learn how to centre clay on the wheel and make two basic shapes of a cylinder and a bowl
You will glaze all your work creating finished pieces

In keeping with professional working practice, the last 15 minutes of each session will be used to clean up your work space.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

The course is for all levels. Beginners will be taken through a course which will introduce them to various ways of forming with clay whilst becoming acquainted with the material, the decoration possibilities and the firings. If you are more independent, you will be supported through your ideas into making, and encouraged to try new techniques.

First Class Requirements

Please bring on your first day:

Small hand towel
Sketchbook and pen/pencil
Any tools you have (However please do not buy any tools until you have had advice from the tutor, we have a limited supply of college tools).

Attendance Requirements

Regular attendance will help you gain maximum benefit from the course.

There are lots of other ceramics courses you can progress onto.

Additional Information

You will be required to pay for materials that you use from the college and for your firing. Details will be given out at the first class and prices will be dependent on materials used and size of work. You may also bring in your own glass, clay or wax etc should you wish to, however there is no storage on site for materials unless they are purchased from the college.

Learners will have the additional cost of clay that they wish to use on the course (the cost of firing and glazing of work is included in the cost of the clay).

Learners cannot bring their own clay to use on this course and must use the clay supplied by the college.

We are able to sell you a basic tool set and if required your tutor can recommend any alternatives.

All learners will receive a health and safety induction in alignment with their course. Learners are required to bring a plastic wipeable apron, please wear closed toe shoes and dress appropriately.
