This course is for learners with basic experience of kiln formed glass or related techniques. It will include glass making methods - fusing, slumping casting and pate de verre, cold finishing, model and mould making, surface texture and decoration, 2D and 3D design and visual communication, and an element of ceramics.
Level 1 experience of kiln formed glass techniques or equivalent experience and transferable skill from sculpture, ceramics or metal casting
Your course is practical and will facilitate your development of skills working with a range of studio glass techniques and some basic application of ceramics in combination with glass. It covers model and mould making using a variety of materials, approaches and starting points; casting, pate de verre, fusing and slumping as well as cold finishing and surface finish and decoration. You will explore and document a number of assignments and use 2D and 3D visual communication approaches. You will further develop your knowledge of the potential of the medium of glass through looking at both contemporary and historical works, and will actively take part in:
• Creation and development of ideas into 2D and 3D
• The creation of sketchbooks/ notebooks
• The creation of samples, test pieces, models and maquettes
• Basic clay and ceramic techniques
• Setting up moulds and glass for kiln firing
• Clay and wax model making
• Rubber mould making
• Refractory mould making
• Fusing, slumping and pate de verre
• Understanding, selecting and preparing glass for kiln firing
• Packing kilns, firing and annealing cycles
• Cold finishing techniques
• Presentation of finished pieces and supporting project work
You will be set assignments and projects and encouraged to adopt an experimental approach. You will be taught through demonstration, group and individual instruction and you will learn from hands on experience. You will document your own learning and progress during the course and develop ideas using 2D as well as 3D approaches.

We strongly recommend that learners wear non slip, closed footwear and protective aprons (and gloves if appropriate) to ensure that any risk from materials used in the class is minimised.”

Apron or overall, sensible footwear, sketchbook/notebook, any modelling tools you may have already, a camera if you have one and any existing ideas/ pieces of work which you would like to show and discuss in the first group session
