This Access to HE programme has been designed to offer you broad experience across Music Technology, Music Performance and Composition and Video Production.
Your course will introduce you to cultural and industry contexts for these subject areas and you will develop a full range of study skills required for further study at Higher Education. The production and performance processes of music, music technology and video will develop practical skills and experience and you will complete the course with a portfolio of production work.
You will demonstrate a high level of interest and commitment to developing your skills and may have an equivalent level 2 qualification although this is not essential. An interview and audition will be required.
A minimum of Level 2 Literacy and Level 2 (GCSE equivalent) numeracy is recommended.
There is a taster day for this course running on 6/6/11 for you to visit the college and meet the team and current students and experience the course environment.
Your courses will be structured around the main modules :
Music Technology
Video Production
Music (including performance , theory and composition) and
Study Skills.
A highly integrated course design means that module content will relate closely and direct the student through practical projects and continual assessment towards final projects with industry relevance to include in your portfolio.
Music Technology focuses on units ‘Nature of Sound’, ‘Audio Recording Techniques’, ‘Midi Sequencing’, ‘Signal Processing’ and ‘Synthesiser and Sampler Systems.
Coursework is assessed throughout the course through assignments completed to deadline.
This is a unit-based course and to achieve the diploma you need to gain a minimum of 60 credits - these are accumulated as the year progresses. You will be awarded a grade of ‘pass’, ‘merit’ or ‘distinction’ for each level 3 unit that you complete.

You will need to attend a minimum of 85% of all sessions to achieve the Access qualification.
The natural progression after having done this course is to study music technology related subjects at University level. Recent students have progressed into Music Technology, Audio Production and Sound Design.
1. Complete an Application Form, stating your preferred Info Days and send this to iag@racc.ac.uk stating your preferred dates and times within the application..
2. We will confirm your appointment on your chosen day by e-mail or telephone, or if fully booked we will suggest an alternative. If you do not have the required entry qualifications for a course you may be asked to do a short skills check at either of the RACC learning centres prior to your interview.
3. At your interview, please bring any relevant certificates or results of skills checks - if you and the staff member feel the course is right for you, you will received a signed enrolment form which you will need to complete and take to Reception at either Clifden or Parkshot to pay your course fees.
"How much homework will I need to do outside of class?”
A minimum of 3 hours a week will be expected.
“What will happen if I miss a class?”
It is essential to remain in contact with your tutors and keep them informed of any issues you have. If this happens rarely then with support you will be able to achieve your course however if this happens frequently it will affect your ability to achieve pass, merit or distinction at Level 3 and you may be withdrawn from the course.
“When will the exams take place?”
Assessment occurs regularly through out the course during each term and within all modules.
“Do I need any special clothing or equipment?”
While not essential, it is very useful if you have Logic Pro or some other sequencing software to undertake compositional and other course work at home.
“Is there any tutorial support?”
Yes, weekly tutorial support is available each week and Additional Learning Support might be available depending upon your circumstances.
