This course is designed to give an introduction to 3D modelling using 3D Studio Max. This industry-standard program is used in computer gaming, architectural visualisation, advertising and in films such as Toy Storyand Lord of the Rings. 3DS Max is an extremely powerful tool which can be daunting for the beginner. This course is structured in a clear and systematic way so that students easily gain a firm understanding of the basics.
Computer literacy and good keyboard skills are essential. Although this course requires only basic computer knowledge, it is suitable for novices as well as professionals -for example, architects, games designers, multimedia artists, engineers and students seeking to improve their career prospects and skills base. Previous programme experience is not necessary, but enthusiasm for exploring new techniques and processes and genuine commitment to learning are vital. The course is designed as a self-contained unit for those interested in acquiring essential skills in 3DS Max, but is designed to be followed by more advanced courses for those aspiring to a professional level and wanting to acquire some 3D animation skills.
Your course will cover: Interface, 3D space and coordinates Modelling objects and scenes Applying colour, textures and maps. Lighting Rendering (output of pictures and movies.) Cameras You will learn through practical demonstration, formal instruction and individual tuition.
There will be no formal assessment as this is a non-accredited course, but constructive feedback on project work will be given in class.

This course is designed to stand alone but could usefully be followed by more advanced 3DS Max courses. Taken together these provide professional program knowledge which can be used in a career in animation, games design, multimedia, or to progress to other longer related courses eg Diploma in Creative Media Production (L2), Access to Multimedia (L3), Graphic Design, Flash etc
Enrolment is best carried out online. If you prefer to enrol in person, you can enrol at either the Clifden or Parkshot centres. You can also enrol by post, payment should be by cheque made payable to Richmond Adult Community College and sent to Postal Enrolments, RACC, Clifden Centre, Clifden Road, Twickenham TW1 4LT
1. How much homework will I need to do outside of class? Projects will be set which can be worked on both inside and outside class; the more you practise the more you will learn. 2. What will happen if I miss a class? If you miss four consecutive classes without notifying RACC you will automatically be withdrawn from the course. 3. When will the exams take place? There are no exams. 4. Do I need any special equipment? A 4GB memory stick to save your work. It is useful to have access both to the internet and to the software outside the class so that you can practise what you have learned in class. 5. Is there any tutorial support? No, but you will be given 1:1 support and feedback in class.
