College Cuts The Carbon

Date:
27 November 2009

A local college has slashed its carbon footprint by 22 tonnes in the past year – and that is just the beginning.

RACC (Richmond Adult Community College) has reduced its annual CO2 emission from 117 tonnes to 95 and aims to cut it to nearer 50 tonnes by this time next year.

The reduction has been achieved despite both the Parkshot, Richmond and Clifden, Twickenham, centres being around 100 years old with insulation problems and outdated heating systems.

The installation of biomass energy efficient boilers at Parkshot, together with the use of light sensors and voltage control units - which have cut power usage by 20% - have played a key role in lowering carbon emissions.

Explains Bill O’Neill, the College’s Head of Estates and Facilities: “As well as improved technology, we have also run a good housekeeping campaign, encouraging everyone to turn off computers and lights and be more aware of how the smallest action can help reduce our carbon footprint.”

Plans to redevelop the Clifden site next year will result in a new eco-friendly boiler and major improvements in roof insulation.

The continuous programme of reducing carbon output inside has been complimented on the Borough’s streets by the adding this summer of an electric Mega Van to the college’s fleet of Smart Cars and bicycles.
